Multi-Piece Trunk Kit vs OE Trunk Mat

Classic vehicles of all sorts are the common choice for all types of OE restorations, restomods, and even pro-touring transformations. The idea is to take a vehicle from the state that it is in and transform it into a “dream car”, whatever level of build that may be.

Commonly the formula is interior, exterior, drivetrain, suspension, wheels and tires, and whatever else the “dream” may include. The previously mentioned areas are important and are definitely the ones that are the most visible, but one area is inexplicably left out. The trunk is the area that is absolutely the least thought about in most vehicle builds. Unless the trunk area is going to be altered due to a gas tank relocation in a restomod or if mini-tubs are a part of pro-touring plan, the caboose is largely left alone. It is so out of mind that paint shops commonly spend a minimal amount of time, and even if they do spend any time at all the same fit and finish is not given to the trunk.

When these vehicles were offered new, the offerings for the trunk were minimal at best. Most were offered with a bare coating of paint, maybe a light spray of undercoat on the trunk floor, and then just an ill-fitting carpet, and the trunk was considered done. Even in some modern restorations and restomod projects, the trunk is given just about the same amount of disrespect. The old offerings are forcibly ripped out, a light coating of paint gets hastily sprayed down, maybe even that afterthought of undercoat is sprayed for a slight level of protection, and another ill-fitting carpet is thrown in. Modern trunk dressing offerings that are year and vehicle specific, like the ones offered from CJ Pony Parts and Summit Racing, are new in the fact that they were freshly purchased, and they only offer an incremental upgrade to what was previously there.

Luckily TMI Products offer multi-piece trunk kits that really do complete an interior transformation by bringing the colors and the styling of the interior into the trunk. TMI offers trunk kits for a wide variety of vehicles including Tri-Five Chevys, Mustangs, and even Novas and Camaros. The kits themselves include panels for both right and left fender areas, one that covers the length of the trunk latch area at the front, and a panel that covers the bulkhead in the rear of the trunk. Some even come with a panel that attaches to the trunk lid. The whole thing is finished off with a layer of carpet that is specific to the year of the vehicle. The idea is to have the trunk carry the same level of fit and finish that the interior displays and also to match the colors and designs that are in the interior. The end result is a vehicle that is 100-percent cohesive in design, is color-matched, and displays the owner as someone who really went the extra mile to complete their custom.

Having a trunk kit really brings all the elements of a custom vehicle together and makes the whole build really cohesive. Not only that but when a trunk kit is purchased at the same source as the rest of the interior, you can guarantee that the color, materials, and pattern all match to really make all of those elements stand out.
